RACE ALLEY
The historic line shack cabins are remnants of Aspen’s skiing culture. Introducing the buildings into a field of tall grasses creates a sense of a modernized relic found. One linear garden contrasts the surrounding by embracing the new architectural connector, giving the sense both inside and out that landscape gesture is moving through the structure. White and black perennials are employed sparingly in this singular mass, echoing the contrast initiated by the white chinking and blackened logs. A grass-dominated stormwater garden separates a front ‘yard’ from the park beyond, while a lawn path bisects the garden to suggest connection between the park and the primary communal space in Line Shack 02.
While a lightly structured platform at the front of the cabins and an extension of hardscape from the alley serve as informal gathering spaces, outdoor activity is centered in the courtwell. This feature steps down from the alley to maintain visual access to the historic structures and to capture natural light. Masses of shrubs lend texture and movement to the space, while a fire feature integrated into the wall of the planter deck formally extends the lower level living space. It is a singular interjection in a landscape that otherwise seeks to hide its invention.
