aspen ambulance district facility
The public-facing lobby of this busy emergency services facility is emphasized by a low wall that extends from the architectural volume to offer a buffer from vehicular activity. As site lines are critical here, planting in the entry court is selected for its low habit The space is punctuated by a seating element projecting from wall which further defines the separation between entry way and ambulance bay. Similar pockets are introduced throughout the hardscape spaces on the site to soften the necessary expanses of concrete. Understory plants in all pockets and in the wild landscape beyond the bounds of construction consist of a primarily native palette of kinnikinnick, fescue, penstemon, sumac, snowberry, and woods rose. Their brilliant fall colors bring welcome contrast and warmth to visitors up to the last weeks before snow blankets the site.
